Talk. I'd listen

Everything here, I say to my friends in real life; it's why Jill thought I was giving her lines when I was just being myself.

One thing I tell people all the time is: drink rum. Seriously, do me a favor this weekend and one night do nuthin but pound rum. Mojitos, Captain n Coke, aged rum on the rocks with a slice of orange, whatever - just don't drink any other type of alcohol.

Drink one glass of water with a multivitamin fore you sleep and see how you feel the next day. No hangover. Plus, note that you'll feel "happy" versus "angry." Those same two chemicals I told you bout last time not only give you that nasty hangover but also make you an angry drunk.

The beauty of rum is when you go on a bender, it only lasts that night. The next day you're just as productive as you woulda been had you not been on a bender at all.

Rum. It's nature's perfect drink.

Another thing I say to people all the time is Proverbs 27:17, which goes Iron sharpens iron, so friends sharpen friends. The people you surround yourself with are your mirrors to the world. It's also why it's painful when people leave your Venn Diagram. You dull a little when they do.

Interestingly, that bible quote was in an article on relationships in the NY Times. The article notes that more marriages are killed by silence than by violence. It's harder than you might think. The talking.

Her: My thing is that I just lose interest in people. You know how when you just want someone gone and you don't even want them to say anything? Ever? I hate how that feels.
Me: (slowly) More than you know.
Her: Yes. So that's why I wanna go slowly. I'm getting ahead of myself by trying to stay behind. Does that make sense? (pause) We don't have to stop talking yet. You could talk. I'd listen.
Me: OK then, let me tell you a story...

Music: so few come and don't go

I think I posted my discovery of rum vs. wine for making me a happier drunk. I loves me some red wine; it's my default drink. But I had a rum and coke on a whim that one night and noticed that not only was it working much more quickly than wine, but it made me giggly, where the wine just made me kind of relaxed and mellow.

I think I'll take you up on that rum thing this weekend.

Please do and let me know!

The stereotype of the jolly pirate seems to have it's roots in the fact that rum actually depresses aggressive behaviour: http://tinyurl.com/6cve2h

I'll have to blog about that somewhere - although the article seems to say that the particular high amount of acetylhydes cause the depressed aggression. I'll have to read it more fully.

Dang. I was great on the rum instructions until you said "don't drink any other type of alcohol" because the gang is going here tonight and they have the craziest Tiki drinks to go with their crazy apps (seriously, the only restaurant I know that serves "pickle roll-ups" and deviled eggs).

I'm just going to have to be a rebel and follow only part of the instructions. Heck, tomorrow's Saturday. I don't have to be productive. My husband is going to help me write my paper on the New Yorker cover, so I really only need *half* of my productivity, anyway.

Hahahaha - that looks great. I'm sure we have something like that here in NYC but I don't know of it.

Well, someday, just try drinking rum all night and see how you feel afterward.

I'm glad you're back, you're one of my staunchest readers! =)

We talked about your post while discussing the plethora of rum drinks offered in tiki mugs. Everybody agrees that rum makes them feel happy. :D

I had several rum and cokes and one crazy tiki drink...as well as far too much food. Left me drinking only water when we moved to the piano bar a coupla miles away. I sang "Jackson" with my husband and "Fernando" with my girlfriend.

That's a good verse, my pastor would expound on that and say that you can look at the people you surround yourself with and see where you'll be in six months (or sumthin like that). Kinda related.

I recall reading that on your blog. That's a sad way to go.

My grandfather always said that marriage was one long conversation.

I'll try the rum. Tequila stopped being my friend last week - it was a sad, sad day.

That's a sweet concept. I like it and may use it.

Tequila is no one's friend! She's just in it for herself. Hot Latina though she might be, I say avoid her at all costs.

And you say from time to time I sound depressing. =P

Some people are better out of your life. How a person enters your life is indicative of how they'll leave. Initially sad but maybe you don't work together . . . and some people just aren't your "sharpening friends" types. I agree that its sad when people leave forever, but my list of people out of my life is a who's who of douchbaggery including but not limited to violent criminals and addicts. And some lesser offenders of course, but the point is as I said before you should be willing to fight for people you love, but if they don't love you back good or bad as they may be they're no friend of yours. So if the conflict comes from outside then fight for them, but if they want out it really is better just to let them go.

I try to extend to my friends a good amount of understanding. It's only when they don't do the same for me or it just becomes a waste of time and energy for me that I bolt.

It's never a good thing but sometimes you gotta...

Great Bible verse, though my inner-private school Christian kid is scandalized by your lowercase 'b' in Bible, lol

A multivitamin helps with hangovers? Fascinating - I must try that. As much as I'd love to try your 'rum only' philosophy, I'm too much attached to Trappist ales at the moment...

I may do it someday...

I too like Trappist ales but that's not helping my gut either so it has to go. Very sad. Luckily, I still have my fine rum!

Sadly, any kind of dark alcohol these days makes me an angry drunk. Rum, brandy...you name it and if something tips me off, I can tend to get mean. True, it depends on the situation but for the most part, I try to stay away from dark drinks.

Ding, ding, ding, ding!

The two drinks with the HIGHEST amounts of acetaldehyde and congeners are tequila and DARK BEERS - which lends credence to the stereotype of the angry, drunk Irishman and Englishman, because of their love of dark beers.

However, rum, either dark or clear, has almost none of them. So give it a try. If you must have clear, you'll have to mix it.

Yeah, too many calories. But you know, like you said, nothing wrong with a little here and there.

Will drink some rum this weekend. Grandpa turns 94 years old. Time to celebrate. Only bad thing is that I have to drive to SF tonight. Fun but argh at the same time.

Thanks!

My brother's a Manhattan man. Partying in Soho, in Upper-Man, on rooftops. He's charming, says he'll be famous, hangs out with 'important' people. He's a writer. An fellow Aries. He only drinks rum.

You kind of remind me of him, except you're a lot more mature and are in touch w/ reality. He took me out around Canal street a few months ago, ordered his Bacardi+Diet coke.. I'm not sure if on the rocks or not, but he told me I should order on the rocks to avoid the harsh-ness, since it was my 1st time. He said it's 0 calories.

The next time I went out w/ friends I felt rebellious ordering my Bacardi+Diet coke. But, I didn't like the taste. Unlike wine, beer, or a vodka-mix, I was dreading each sip. Too harsh. But, I am still not done exploring rum. I just think my brother requested the wrong type of rum. My friends that night (who were in their 30's) expressed a dislike for Bacardi.

So, if I only had someplace to go this weekend, I would try some rum. The kind of rum you are talking about. I am very, very curious. And, very happy to be turning 21 soon - for which I will party in Manhattan for. ;)

Mojitos are great, especially pom. But of course, they have too many calories according to my Aries brother.

Way too many calories, as I noted in the comment right above.

There's lot of different types of rums; that plus your taste buds change when you get older. When I was younger, I didn't like anything that wasn't sickly sweet.

BTW, if I hear of an apartment, I'll totally let you know.

True... What rum do you think a youngin' would like? :P

Oh and thanks.. I had to delete my entry on 'newyorkers' because all I got were people being assholes critiquing how i wrote my entry. I didn't realize how downhill LJ had gone. Ridiculous. I see most of the people on here have no real lives or friends so they criticize strangers online for no reason instead.
