Jill

Breaking with tradition, the Sexologist/SX's real name's Jill McDevitt. She owns a sex novelty shop called Feminique Boutique in Philadelphia.

----------

My religion says, quite plainly, that there is a separation of church and state. Only bad things can come if the two mix.

History's borne this out: The Crusades, the Inquisition, State terrorism - all tangible examples of religion used as a sharp object with the obvious results. Religion's a shield. It's never been a good sword.

More importantly though, it's counterproductive; religion with government strengthens government but kills religion. In Europe, where tax is still levied to pay for churches, belief's at an all time low.

Here in America, where religion is not allowed into government, a whopping 50% of the population believes. For the good of religion and people, the god and government should never mix. Love of god, when forced, isn't love at all. Love of anything, when forced, isn't love at all.

I bring this up cause Jill's being sued by the local priest; he wants to protect the children - despite her being in full compliance with local laws.

Personally, I want neither a priest nor the government protecting my children's moral constitution - when I get 'em, I'll protect them just fine, thank you. Also, it's ludicrous to have the choices of adults dictated by the possibility that a child's sensibilities may be affected. That's why we have parents. If you're in the area (or even if you're not) here's a petition.

As for Jill and me, our Venn Diagrams separated not that long ago but she dropped me a line recently and it was good to hear from her. It's always good to hear from people from your possible pasts, yeah?

Y'know, I met her on a random Saturday night a while back. Let's see what happens this Saturday night.

Music: I'm happy for you I think I'm gonna take that drive

I'll sign it. Pisses me off when the church with a big C or the church with any number of little c's h's j's or any other number or combination of letters interferes with stuff well out of their jurisdiction.

It's so weird that you should put it like that because . . . I was actually giving a theological presentation before Jesuit priests when I realized to myself, "this isn't working for me here."

And yes. If morality is going to be programed it should be programed by parents, aunts and uncles, older siblings, neighbors and the like. Not errant priests and government. Besides . . . everyone's so afraid of sex. If you let kids know that - while they themselves shouldn't be engaging in it with other kids or even worse an adult - its perfectly normal, natural, blah blah blah. Kids stop worrying about sex summoning the devil or some crazy shit like that and we'll stop having all these ridiculous taboos about homosexuality, clothing, art, literature, and pretty much everything else. On the other hand parents seem to have an aversion of late to raising their spawn so . . .

There's this old joke that you need a license to raise a dog but not a child.

Clearly, that's the way it should be but every once in a while a think, "Y'know..."

I had forgotten about that one. I actually love kids. I think they're the sweetest, guiless, cutest little people out there. It just makes me so angry to see parents who care so little for their own kids that they can't initiate them into society.

and as for something a lil bit more relevent,

I'm oftentimes not surprised at how little distance we've covered since our puritanical roots. you would think it'd be okay to see a boob or two after 500 years "progress".

you're right, it's the parent's job to teach kids, not the environment.

I’m pretty sure our eager priest wouldn’t stand much of a chance around here and I hope that’s how Jill's story will end too.

On another note: I still don’t see the relation between paying church tax (which, in my case amounts to ridiculous 0.5% of my taxable income I’d donate to another non-profit anyway if I decided to leave church by writing a quick note) and true faith.

I hope so too.

There was a really great article on the whole thing in the WSJ (not the one I found) and I couldn't find it again to put up their argument. I remember that I found it very compelling though.

I'm gonna post this in the atheist community where they'll predictably get wound up, but it should get you loads of signatures on the petition.
