Guernica

Stopped by a friend's house midday in Queens cause I was around the hood but he was out so his wife and I caught up. She wants to fix me up with some of her doctor friends.

I'm not sure she knows what she's getting them into.

----------

Picasso's Guernica is probably one of the most famous paintings of suffering out there. Buddhism says that suffering comes from the uncontrollable. Either externally, such as in the painting, or internally, when we try to control the uncontrollable.

I believe that.

On a related note, man, I wish I could fall asleep.

Of course, there is no great tragedy without some small gain(s): I'm completely caught up on Lost and BSG, can now do all my sabre strikes with my left hand and have made a month's worth of chili.

I'm thinking of brushing up my German or teaching myself Arabic or something. I dunno. I'd rather sleep.

Lost is still surprisingly good (I can't believe they killed off ______). BSG...almost as good.

I love this painting. It is my second favorite painting of all time. However, I will not hang it in my house. It is far too disturbing. Which is saying a bit as I've hung some Dali lithos. For months after my grandfather died before I'd fall asleep I'd see this painting in my head. For some reason the floating head is indelibly etched into my mind. So instead I hang Don Quixote on my wall because it's ever so much more cheerful.

It's a great painting; like all good art, it makes you think and also unsettles you. I think my other entry about the Nighthawks is my favorite painting, though.

Hah! I've actually never seen this painting before. I only knew he got in huge amounts of trouble for it. (It was this one right?)

Is it true that it's harder to fight a left-handed swordsman than a right-handed one? I only have one example and I don't know if he's just freakishly good or the left-handedness has encouraged him to consider things outside of my sphere of experience.

Yes, I believe so because they weren't prepared for something this raw.

It's harder because of distancing and timing. With a left lead, it's a lot shorter distance for the sword to travel and the angle of attack is different. These two things then throw off your timing because the strike you expect to come in a beat comes in a half-a-beat from a different angle.

I do it so that I can say that line from the Princess Bride someday.

I'm that big a dork.

Aw. If we were the same age and lived in the same city and . . . well I'd be so into you.

Yes it is a great painting.

You really should figure out this sleep problem of yours. Is it stress?

Though I'd need some almond m&m's for dessert to agree here.

Yay, another LOST fan! I can't believe they killed off that person as well - but here's the thing - is he really dead?

Oh and ahem...this could help, possibly. [http://www.sleepcenters.org/Centers.aspx?state=NY]

Thanks for that - I've actually gone to sleep centers in the past. It's helped a bit but not enough.

I'm a little more rested today, which is a good thing.

I like the new icon. =)
