Remembering Snow Angels and Lynda

My college English teacher, Stewart O'Nan was a good fella and an amazing teacher. He once said to me, "Your stuff is good. Just...work on it." I still remember. His novel, Snow Angels was just made into a film with Kate Beckinsale. I was lucky, I think, because I had a string of really good English teachers people in my life.

Paul used to have a B-Team of friends that were fun but he learned that you should only have an A-Team because you only got so much time and energy.

Remember when I said that your friends are mirrors to yourself? If you've changed and your friends haven't, maybe it's time to start cutting. Or call the ones that matter.

I shoulda called Stewart. Had his digits - just never got around to it. He was a good guy. Probably won't remember me now.

But I remember him.

----------

Thomas Mann once said that A man’s dying is more the survivors’ affair than his own.

Lynda was murdered ten years ago by a guy in my college circle of friends. My friends who knew her well never talk about it but it's always there.

She and I only met a few times so it was more consoling my friends than anything else. But I did want to write something - if only to confirm that what the reporter wrote was true. She was beautiful.

Yeah, call your friends that matter.

By far one of my favourite posts (from you).
It's 6:33 in the morning here and I'm doing work, running on no sleep.
But I just read the article, all 3 pages of it.

On another note, your professor might remember you, you never know.
Holy, 47, only?!?!

Thank you.

I dunno how to get in touch with him now but maybe someday. When I have more time.

Crazy story about Lynda, right? Just a waste.

You are very welcome.

I was so hooked to the story/article I couldn't put it down. Also visited the other site you linked to.
The article was from 10 years ago, right?
Definitely a waste.
So what happened? Was it him?

You could probably find your prof's e-mail somewhere on the internet... if you really wanted to. Or had more time.

Oh yeah, that's how I do it. To get in touch with my professors, I look them up on the internet.

And yes, crazy crazy story.

I remember my writing mentor back in college. I took his seminars for pretty much all 4 years of college. He was quite close to all of his students, and we spent every other weekend having dinner parties at his home. It was fun.

Wow, I really wish I had that...
Lucky you.
Hardly any of my professors even knew my name. And I could not imagine being invited to their houses, let alone for a dinner party every other weekend.

You need to write to him or something! I ran into one of my undergrad history profs two weeks ago. It's been 5-6 years since I had a class with him, and he not only remembered me, but remembered the papers I wrote and all kinds of crazy stuff. I was able to tell him how inspired I was by his classes (mostly Chinese history/world-view) and by his manner of approaching the world. I think it meant as much to me to be able to tell him how I felt as it did to him to hear it.

And you are so right about the A-team friends.

What a sad thing to happen...and what a story!

I don't have his contact information anymore - its sad because I once did and never took advantage of it. He was one of four English instructors that shaped how I write now.

Yes, such a sad thing. When her younger sister got up to speak, it was like an animal howling. I hope never to hear such a sound again. It was painful - the sadness was overwhelming.

My A-team friends are the friends that know that I only call every other month due to the workaholic deal. I try to email, but they prefer phone calls. But you're right, I should call the ones that matter.

Btw, what a story. Wow.

Yes, those are my A-Team list as well.

And yes, what a story - the true ones are always more scary than the fiction ones, no?

What's also more scary about true stories is the fact that you can relate to most of them - either by first hand experience or it's someone you know.

I'd like to say that my A-list friends are those that I can count in one hand. Don't you agree?

That was a very moving article about Lynda. It's strange how tragedies can intersect our lives. We know they're there, but may not acknowledge it, uncomfortable reminders of what isn't always pleasant about the people we surround ourselves with.

I thought it was very thoughtful and well written.

I know a lot of those people; either actually or through friends. Quite something.

The world can be distressingly small.

So, I would take it that you're Korean, at least by descent? I spent a ridiculous amount of time over there in 2006 and consider it one of my favorite places to visit/live temporarily. [My husband did a similar stint over there before we met and he concurs.] It's seriously annoying that I cannot find good Korean food anywhere around here. You cook, but do you cook much traditional Korean food?

And hopefully you don't take this as in any way remotely offensively. I'm just curious about Korean recipes that can be cooked without any access to specialty items because I live in the boondocks.

I'm Chinese actually but I do make a good amount of Korean food.

Basically, the only real thing you might have difficulty getting is sesame oil - which is a dark brown color. It's basically the oil of toasted sesame seeds and significantly different from regular sesame oil.

Once you get that, you can make maybe 60% of most Korean dishes. The other crucial things are garlic, soy sauce, sugar and scallions.

*facepalm* That's what I get for assuming. No offense intended!

I can't get toasted sesame oil in the groceries here now, but I may be able to convince the Forrest Gump Kroger [you never know what you're going to get] to special order some for me. They did that with fresh goats milk and bunch organic beets and now carry them full time. Perhaps other people are secretly desiring toasted sesame oil, too.

Do you have a good recipe resource to recommend? I can recreate dishes after eating them, but it's been too long since I was in Korea to do this reliably, I think.

a) HOW DARE YOU! Just kidding, that's fine. I'm not one of those people that are easily offended.
b) Have you no asian market near you? I find that most towns have one (how small is your town?)
c) Try this:

* 1 pound beef top sirloin, thinly sliced
* 6 cloves garlic, minced
* 2 green onions, thinly sliced
* 4 tablespoons dark soy sauce
* 2 tablespoons white sugar
* 1 tablespoon sesame oil
* 1 tablespoon rice wine (if you don't have sub dry white)
* 1 tablespoon lightly toasted sesame seeds (optional)

Throw everything into a bowl and let it sit for at least two hours in the cooler.

Oil pan.

Cook until desired doneness.

Post pics on LJ.

Eat.

My town does not even have a movie theater, we have to drive an hour to Jackson. We do, however, have four casinos happy to part you from your hard earned money in exchange for spending quality time hunched over slot machines watching your dignity evaporate into the smoky haze.

Theoretically 28K people live here, but you wouldn't know it. No Asian market, and I usually stock up on supplies when we go back to Dallas where we used to live--which has marvelous asian and other specialty markets--but since I've been grounded since...last August [cries]...no restock recently.

That looks positively delicious. I will definitely have to try it, and soon. Yum! Thanks!

I was at Lynda's memorial service too. I didn't know her well, but was also at Columbia Law at the time. I was so moved by her best friend's words. Ugh, I can't believe it's been 10 years. So, so sad. I wonder what happened to the NJ girlfriend.
