Priority / Happy Turkey Day

I'm at my parents having a pre-Thanksgiving Day dinner. My mom travels a lot for work so I don't get to see her as much as I would like. We were catching up.

Me: ...so if all that works out, I should be out of this hole in about 30 to 36 months.
Her: But what about your priority?
Me: (puzzled) My priority?
Her: Marriage!
Me: (laughing) That's really like the last thing on my mind.
Her: What about kids?
Me: OK, I was wrong, that's the last thing on my mind.
Her: It's your priority!
Me: It's really not, mom.
Her: OK, it's mine. (long pause) I mean...you're not getting any younger....

You know you've reached a new point in your life when your mother says the words, You're not getting any younger to you and you're wearing a Pink Floyd - The Wall tee-shirt eating a third helping of carbohydrates.

Yes, a new point.

Happy Turkey Day guys - see you tomorrow (or Monday).

I've always taken pretty extreme issue with the cultural notion that people should make having children a "priority" even when they are in absolutely no situation to provide said children with the ideal life. Always seemed extremely selfish to me on the part of the parents to "want children," but then figure that the act itself is so univerally positive that they've still done well even if the children's lives suck ass forever after.

I agree with that - although some of the best people I've met in life came about about when their parents were really young and probably not prepared for it all.

What are you gonna do for Turkey day?

Heh. We're related. Your mom is my grandmother. "oh Ari-ka, I want it the great-grrandkids. Why you not find nice boy and get marrrried? When I your age . . . " And so it goes.

What's sad is that the conversation went like that almost verbatim. My mom, who is foreign born, actually said to me tonight, You're not getting any younger in her light Chinese accent.

Boggles the mind.

Yeah . . . I'm younger than you so mine hasn't quite gotten to that point, but she has made some very strong suggestions that I should get started. Nice when a parent tells you you're old, huh?

My mom gives me that "you're not getting any younger" speech every other week. I think she's overdue.

Happy Turkey Day to you too!

My mom's not been quite as blunt before so that's new, at least.

Your mum is kind of cute. =)

Oh my... but it really sucks when parents try to implant wishes and thoughts into your mind. Because it kind of works and then everything ends up being even more chaotic than it was before because you have to worry about their problems either without really noticing.

At least that's my experience.

I just want to say I'm impressed with you. Planning business/job stuff 30-36 months into the future is boggling to me. OTOH, all I can think about planning when I'm going to start and stop popping out kids.

That's something in and of itself.

I've got no choice; I've gotta keep moving.

That must be annoying hearing that from your mom.. I can't imagine my parents saying that, although it did come up for the 1st time over Thanksgiving (towards my 27yo brother) but it wasn't brought up seriously. Matters of the heart should never be rushed, and if they are, it will most likely prevent it from happening. I'm single and currently not looking. I don't want the drama or a relationship in general (esp. with the trauma men have put me through this year).. It's better not to be 'looking'.. when/if it's time it'll come, I'm not gonna think about it. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

I had a great Thanksgiving, thanks.

And yes, I totally don't think anyone should rush into anything. Things come as they come and I'll wait as long as I have to.

I didn't have any pressure for a while because my brother got married so they figured he'd be on the ball about it but then he got a divorce.

So now, it's on to me.

Hello!

ooh, i miss the cold! ny is so pretty this time of year...well, at least when it snows, but not when it's so cold and when you breathe in the inside of your nose freezes.
