This modern love

Note to self: 48 oz of black coffee with DayQuil in one sitting is way too much caffeine.

Way...too...much.

Pardon me as I curl up and shake myself to death.

----------

Nadi, I actually posted a happy date story once. Of course that too went to hell but that's neither here nor there. And I had two nice dates recently but one ended up as a figurative train wreck; the other, a literal car wreck.

A while back, I did see a girl I've was orbiting around for almost a year right before she got gone.

Her: Hi! (pause) Did you ever work through your things?
Me: (pause) In a manner of speaking.
Her: What does that mean?
Me: (thinking) There's this river, Lethe, that the Greeks thought that, when you died, your spirit went there to drink from it so you could forget your former life and get on with your new one.
Her: Okaaay...creepy...and...
Me: (laughing) You're trying to forget someone; I'm trying to forget someone. It's like that song This Modern Love, Do you wanna come over and kill some time?
Her: (laughing) This has got to be worst invitation for a date I've had since junior high.
Me: I go for the superlative. So...you wanna come over and kill some time?
Her: (thinking) Sure.

Interestingly, in classical Greek, lethe could also mean the opposite of truth; the opposite of real.

This modern love is like lactose-free, shelf-stable, non-fat, non-dairy cream.

All the trappings of the real thing without a drop of it.

Not even a drop.

She's a sweetheart. I hope she finds something someone real.

Music: modern love breaks me This modern love wastes me

Why do I know that feeling all too well?

Get well soon!

Because you're a mother now so you've developed that sixth sense.

Thanks for the kind thoughts!

It's the dayquil talking, eh?

How'd you catch a cold in the middle of Summer?

Lack of sleep, late nights till 5AM, working 20X the average pace.

The usual.

That'll do it.

Is the sleep thing cyclical?

Pretty much; I usually get one week of good sleep and then two weeks of hellish sleep.

It's usually set off by things like breakups, work, car crashes...

Her: Okaaay...creepy...and...

Creepy?! I thought it was a cool reference.

I think you're still real, though. You just gotta quit the DayQuil. That stuff's potent. Take bourbon neat every 2-4 hours, or consume in hot toddy form with herbal tea (no coffee or other caffeine), sleep lie flat for 24-48hours straight with someone to read to you when your mind starts thinking you need to get up and work, and you'll be fine.

I'll pick up some bourbon today - what kind should I get?

As for lying down, I'd love to but I'm busier than a one-armed coat hanger.

No time, no time...

I'm not a habitual bourbon drinker, but I think it was Knob Creek. I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked for both that tickling cough that won't go away, and the bone-rattling, sludge-laden cough that makes people look at you funny.

You need an assistant you can order around from your bed.

There's a chinese myth similar to your Greek one. Only the river is actually a cup of tea that's given to you by an old lady before you "cross the bridge" to your next life.

Seems like no matter what culture you're in, there are things people always want to forget.

I never knew that - I don't suppose you have a website or something where I can read up on it (it's the geek in me).

Also, how did you come across my blog?

Just curious...

Pretty interesting stuff.

I've read your friend's Rain's blog for almost 5-6 years now. That boy has alot of talent. Never commented because he's a little intimidating, if that makes sense...

Good job on 72nd to Canal btw.
